Indigo Trigger’s Lead-to-Cash Bash kicks off with AI front and center

Indigo Trigger’s Lead-to-Cash Bash opened with a powerful message: AI isn’t the future of media sales — it’s the present. Hearst Newspapers took the stage with a session titled “Smarter Sales, Real Results: How AI Is Powering Change at Hearst Newspapers,” offering a rare inside look at how one of the nation’s largest publishers is reengineering revenue operations from the ground up.

Hearst has been rolling out a steady stream of new digital advertising products, data tools, video offerings and AI-powered sales assets. Internally, these initiatives often fall under the “NCP” umbrella — a suite of modern solutions that require structured rollout, training and long-term adoption support. And in an era when legacy publishers are racing to modernize, Hearst is showing that tradition and transformation don’t just coexist — they accelerate one another.

A living lab for sales innovation

Katerina (Kat) White

As digital transformation, product expansion and cross-divisional collaboration move at record speed, Hearst Newspapers’ Sales Operations, Enablement and AI teams have aligned around a single mission: reinvent how sales teams learn, sell and scale. In their Lead-to-Cash Bash session, Katerina (Kat) White, Director of Sales Operations and Enablement, and Michael McCarthy, Senior Director of AI, Sales and Business Solutions, shared how they’re reshaping Hearst’s revenue engine.

Hearst’s approach is modeled after Epcot — a “living lab” where sales teams test ideas, refine processes and rapidly improve how people work. The challenge, they said, mirrors what nearly every media organization faces today: too many tools, too little time to learn them, and nonstop pressure to sell increasingly complex advertising solutions. AI, White and McCarthy explained, is the bridge.

Building confidence from day one

One of Hearst’s most compelling advancements is an AI-powered cold-call simulator that gives new sales reps a safe environment to practice real-world conversations and objection handling. The result: stronger confidence, faster readiness and better use of the tools at their disposal.

Seasoned reps benefit too. AI-driven coaching tools and automated prep workflows are helping experienced account executives become more focused, more prepared and more effective. As White emphasized: “Everything comes back to confidence. Reps trust the training, they trust the tools, and they trust the process.”

From tool overload to an integrated AI hub

Hearst contrasted its previous environment — more than 10 disconnected tools, manual reporting and one-size-fits-all training — with a new AI-assisted ecosystem built around:

  • Instant meeting preparation
  • Personalized learning paths
  • Automated insights and feedback loops
  • DISC behavioral profiles integrated into planning
  • AI-supported storytelling across screens and platforms
  • The company’s flagship AI tools include:
  1. Prep & Plan GPT – Automated research and meeting prep

  2. Hearst Sales Coach – Objection handling, negotiation guidance and deal simulations

  3. Cold Call Simulator – High-fidelity role play with immediate coaching

  4. Anyscreen Sales Copilot – Helping reps confidently tell Hearst’s digital video story

So far, the measurable impact includes 80% voluntary adoption, a 25% reduction in onboarding time and a 22% jump in confidence scores.

Bringing AI to where reps already work

Mike McCarthy

To accelerate adoption, Hearst is embedding AI directly into Salesforce and Outreach — the tools reps already use every day. New integrations will deliver real-time coaching, sequencing suggestions, conversation analysis and next-step recommendations immediately after client meetings. Managers will gain clearer visibility into deal health and rep performance, enabling more targeted coaching.

McCarthy described the evolving system as “a GPT + Outreach loop connected to Salesforce” — a continuous feedback engine improving both results and data quality.

Guardrails, governance and the foundations of trust

Hearst emphasized that none of this works without strong governance and clean data. Standardized KPIs, streamlined workflows and disciplined data hygiene ensure the AI delivers accurate and actionable guidance.

Their framework is grounded in three principles:

  1. People first.

  2. Integrate AI into existing workflows.

  3. Measure what truly moves the needle.

Quick wins, cultural shifts, peer influence and daily habit formation — what McCarthy likened to the lessons of Atomic Habits — are helping drive adoption across markets.

What’s next

Hearst’s roadmap includes deeper Salesforce integration, expanded Outreach + Kaia capabilities, more dynamic systems and fully connected workflows from prep through close. The goal is simple: an AI-powered sales ecosystem that strengthens trust, reduces friction and enables sales teams to perform at their highest level.

For Hearst Newspapers, that future is already underway — and the LeadtoCash Bash audience got a front-row seat to how AI is redefining sales excellence across one of the nation’s most storied media companies.
