Influential 'Scorchy Smith' Comic Gets the IDW Book Treatment

Posted
By: E&P Staff A book titled "Scorchy Smith And The Art Of Noel Sickles" has been published by IDW.

The drawing in Sickles' 1930s adventure comic was a major influence on cartoonists such as Milton Caniff, who began his classic "Terry and the Pirates" strip in 1934.

Comics Reporter blogger Tom Spurgeon, in a Tuesday review of the 394-page hardcover, wrote: "Looking through Sickles' 'Scorchy' strip you can quickly pick up on the progression in his experiments. The work becomes darker-looking as Sickles innovates in terms of shading and light sourcing and use of negative space -- the famous chiaroscuro effect."

Spurgeon's full review, and some "Scorchy Smith" art, can be seen here.

IDW also publishes collections of comics such as "Dick Tracy" and the aforementioned "Terry and the Pirates."
