Inform.com Offers RSS News

Posted
By: Mike Shields (MEDIAWEEK) Inform.com, a Web site that allows users to organize and navigate through multiple news sites in one place, goes live today. The new venture is the brainchild of Neal Goldman, the founder of Capital IQ, a similar information distribution tool for the financial industry that he sold to McGraw-Hill/S&P last year.

The Inform Reader, which consumers can access free of charge, has been described as a combination of RSS and search. Its interface allows users to select from a list of 10,000 publications that Inform has indexed and have content delivered to them however they prefer. Users can also create their own channels based on topics of interest, and unlike RSS feeds, Inform pulls content from every page of every site it monitors.

?RSS feeds are very limiting,? said Goldman. ?This goes much deeper.?

The product?s real breakthrough is its unique linguistics-based search technology called ?meta-tagging,? which Inform says will provide users far more refined, contextually relevant searches than Google and other engines.

While users may not be initially wowed by meta-tagging, they will likely gravitate to Inform?s easy-to-use interface. Moreover, the site?s offerings may speed adoption of Web content aggregation tools by the masses.
