IPA, the Association of Graphic Solutions Providers, and the non-profit Idealliance, which seeks to develop standards and best practices for efficiencies in the digital media supply chain, have released their "Ink Optimization RoundUp - 2010 Results Report."
In the evaluation of ink-saving technologies that substitute black ink for color ink to achieve a desired process color, participating systems were tested to assess their capabilities. The results are intended to inform printers and print buyers on the use, benefits and drawbacks of ink optimization software.
The 69 pages of results, including printed samples from each solution, are based on the study led by Abhay Sharma, of Ryerson University, and Ben Starr, who compared participating ink-optimization systems in terms of total ink reduction, color change, stability on press, file integrity and features of each solution.
Print tests were not performed on newsprint or with a Web offset press. The tests were run using Sappi Ltd. McCoy premium imaging paper on a 28"x40", eight-color ROLAND 700 sheetfed offset press.
The evaluation considered solutions from 11 suppliers in seven countries: Agfa, Alwan, GMG, Kodak, OneVision, ppi Media, CGS, FineEye Color Solutions, TGLC, Beijing Founder Electronics, and MPX360.
Tests confirmed that optimization works, with the systems able to process files in real time, reduce CMY values and ink consumption, and retain colorimetric accuracy and visual similarity to the original.
