By: (AP) An editor of an Iraqi weekly newspaper was shot and killed Tuesday on the roof of his office's building, police said. His daughter said he had been threatened because of his writings.
Two men followed Ahmed Shawkat, editor of the independent
Without Direction, to the roof -- where he went to make a phone call -- and one of them shot him, police said.
"He calls for democracy and our people don't understand the meaning of democracy. Maybe the Islamists have taken a stance against him for that reason," said Roaa Shawkat, his daughter.
Several weeks ago, Ahmed Shawkat received letters warning him to close his newspaper, said his daughter, who also works at
Without Direction.
