By: Joe Strupp Mark Horvit, projects editor of the Fort Worth (Tex.) Star-Telegram, has been named the new executive director of Investigative Reporters & Editors, according to a notice on the group's Web site.
In a message posted by IRE Board President James Grimaldi, Horvit's choice was announced, but with an unusual requirement that he receive confirmation for a post at the University of Missouri.
"The next step in Mark's hiring process is his appointment to the University of Missouri faculty so that he can teach a class there as part of our longstanding arrangement with the University," Grimaldi wrote. "We fully expect that Mark will get that formal approval given the strong support he already has received from a number of MU journalism faculty members. We will have an official announcement when that occurs, but wanted to let you know what was developing as soon as we could.??
"An accomplished investigative reporter and editor, Mark is passionate about IRE and watchdog journalism," Grimaldi added. "He is a smart, quick, enthusiastic and energetic investigative journalist whose creative spirit is just the spark IRE needs right now.?? Mark is someone who intuitively gets IRE, our members and investigative journalism."
Horvit has worked as a reporter and/or editor at The News Herald in Panama City, Fla., the Corpus Christi (Texas) Caller-Times, The Houston Post, Columbia (Mo.) Daily Tribune and The Charlotte (N.C.) Observer before joining the Star-Telegram, where he has worked both as a reporter and an editor.??
Horvit replaces Brant Houston, who left IRE to become the Knight Chair in Investigative Journalism at the University of Illinois.
The IRE executive director oversees 12 full-time staff members; operates IRE's professional programs, publications and a Web site; and oversees a $1.4 million budget, fund-raising campaigns and the $3 million-plus endowment fund.?
