IRP Receives Grant from Gates Foundation

By: E&P Staff The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation granted $1.6 million to the International Reporting Project (IRP) to provide fellowships to U.S. editors to improve the media's coverage of global health and development issues.

The five-year grant will support 24 senior U.S. journalists per year for the IRP's Gatekeeper Editors Program.

"We're delighted that the Gates Foundation supports our efforts to bring compelling international health and development stories to the attention of the public," John Schidlovsky, founding director of IRP, said in a statement.

The IRP selects 12 journalists twice a year to travel for up to two weeks on a fact-finding trip usually in the developing world.

Since 2000, the IRP took Gatekeepers to Indonesia, Brazil, South Africa, Lebanon and Syria, India, Egypt, and Nigeria. In November, the group is going to the Korean peninsula.

The IRP was formed in 1998 with the idea of encouraging U.s. journalists to cover global stories that are neglected or under-reported in the media.
