By: Greg Mitchell The Web has been burning up in recent days with responses to Walter Isaacson's cover story in Time magazine this week on how to, maybe, "save" newspapers. Tonight he appeared on The Daily Show with Jon Stewart who had an idea of his own.
Stewart proposed putting some kind of narcotic on newsprint that would get people addicted to newspapers. Instead of ink coming off on your fingers, it would be traces of a drug you could then ingest. Stewart acted out a junkie needing to satisfy his craving for newsprint....
Isaacson repeated many of his ideas from the story and they kicked around the charging for content proposals. Stewart opposed Isaacson's itunes comparisons and favored charging aggregators for links to news sites. He called saving newspapers one of the most "worthy" notions out there -- quite seriously.
But he laughed at Isaacson, however, when the latter suggested that if the idea of newspapers was just being proposed now, printing out all kinds of neat things you can take with you everywhere, people would abandon TV and the internet.
