By: Dave Astor Mike Ramirez, John Sherffius, and Steve Breen don't share the same ideology, but share this: Each recently won a major editorial cartooning award, and each is syndicated by Copley News Service.
"We are so proud of having won this triple crown of cartooning," said Copley Vice President and Editor Glenda Winders, when contacted by E&P. "These three cartoonists all have different philosophies and different drawing styles, but each is outstanding and deserving in his own way."
Yesterday, the conservative Ramirez won the
Fischetti Editorial Cartoon Competition. Ramirez is the former Los Angeles Times cartoonist who now works for Investor's Business Daily. He won the 1994 Pulitzer Prize for editorial cartooning while with The Commercial Appeal of Memphis.
Last month, the liberal Sherffius won the
Herblock Prize. The former Ventura County (Calif.) Star and St. Louis Post-Dispatch cartoonist now works for the Boulder (Col.) Camera.
And, in December, Breen won the National Press Foundation's Berryman Award. The San Diego Union-Tribune staffer -- whose politics fall somewhere between those of Ramirez and Sherffius -- won the 1998 editorial cartooning Pulitzer while with the Asbury Park Press of Neptune, N.J.
Breen, Sherffius, and Ramirez are among nine editorial cartoonists syndicated by the San Diego-based Copley.
