By: Lucia Moses Last week was a good one for competition in Cleveland, both on the basketball court (as the NBA Cavaliers won the rights to draft high school phenom Lebron James) and on the newsstands, with the return of
Cleveland Free Times, under new independent ownership led by its former publisher and editor.
It closed seven months ago as part of a deal by rival alternative weekly chains Village Voice Media LLC and NT Media Corp. to shutter two papers in their competing markets of Cleveland and Los Angeles. The Justice Department forced an asset sale of the papers.
"Rumors of our death were greatly exaggerated," proclaimed the
Free Times' Web site last week. The paper is billing itself as locally owned, in contrast to the NT-owned
Cleveland Scene.
