It's Miller Time for a Few Editorial Cartoonists

Posted
By: E&P Staff Perhaps many editorial cartoonists think the Judith Miller saga is a little too "inside baseball" for newspaper readers. Because only a handful of cartoonists have commented on the controversial New York Times reporter since this weekend's big Times article about her. And what these artists had to say wasn't complimentary.

One of the cartoonists was Ann Telnaes, who -- as someone on the roster of the New York Times Syndicate-marketed Cartoonists & Writers Syndicate -- sort of shares a company affiliation with Miller. Telnaes, in her Tuesday cartoon, shows Miller in bed with a bare-chested guy labeled "Pentagon security clearance." Miller, who's holding a pen and a reporter's notebook, asks the guy: "So, how would you like to be identified -- former fly boy?"

Another cartoonist lampooning Miller and the Times was Mike Luckovich of The Atlanta Journal-Constitution and Creators Syndicate. In his Tuesday cartoon, Luckovich shows a man labeled "Times editor" wearing a New York Times newspaper as a hat. Part of the hat is a stinking fish labeled "Judith Miller." The editor, seeking an opinion about his aromatic headgear, asks a startled-looking woman: "Does it flatter me?"
