J-Lab Offers Seed Money for Community News Sites

By: Jay DeFoore J-Lab, the Institute for Interactive Journalism at the University of Maryland, is inviting U.S. nonprofit groups and education organizations to apply for funding to launch innovative new community news ventures.

The initiative, called New Voices, is funded by the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation. Ten projects will be selected in 2006, and each will be eligible for as much as $17,000 in seed money. The sites will be asked to cooperate with J-Lab in spotlighting best practices and lessons learned.

Funding will be awarded to U.S.-based 501(c)3 organizations and educational institutions, including civic groups, community organizations, public broadcasters, middle schools, high schools, colleges and universities.

Funding will be awarded to start-ups only. Ongoing efforts are not eligible to apply unless they are proposing a new venture.

Applicants must launch their proposed initiative within 10 months of receiving funding. In addition to providing quarterly updates, they must be willing to share widely their progress and lessons learned. Updates from the reports will be posted at the Web site, www.J-NewVoices.org. A final report is required after two years. An applicant?s plans for sustaining their initiatives will be a key factor in selecting grantees.

The deadline for receiving grant proposals is Feb. 8, 2006.
