Jacksonville 'Times-Union' To Lay off 60 Workers

Posted
By: Joe Strupp The Times-Union of Jacksonville, Fla., is laying off 60 employees across several departments, but not in the newsroom, the paper reported Tuesday.

Publisher Carl Cannon said in a story that the layoffs, announced Monday, followed "nearly a year of declining revenue from real estate advertising. "

The paper did not disclose specifics about severance, but said a severance package and "employment transition services" would be available to the affected workers.

The Times-Union reported that the cuts would save the paper $2 million to $3 million, adding that it employs 1,000 full- and part-time workers and more than 400 independent contract carriers.

"We're always looking at everything we can do to economize and do things better," Cannon said, also adding, "We are confident that our economy will improve and the Times-Union can return to a more aggressive expansion of products and services."
