James Kilpatrick Ending One Column, Continuing Another

Posted
By: E&P Staff James J. Kilpatrick has decided to end his Universal Press Syndicate column "Covering the Courts" effective tomorrow, Jan. 30. But he'll continue his other Universal feature, "The Writer's Art."

Kilpatrick's editor at Universal, Alan McDermott, said: "At 87 years old, Jack feels he no longer has the energy to travel to the Supreme Court every week to hear arguments and then research and write the column."

McDermott added that the 1981-launched "Writer's Art" requires "less legwork" for Kilpatrick, and "he enjoys the give-and-take with readers."

The editor also said: "Jack has meant so much to Universal. He joined us in 1979 when we purchased the Washington Star Syndicate. He, along with Bill Buckley and the late Mary McGrory, added immeasurable strength to our editorial lineup."

Before starting "Covering the Courts," the former Richmond (Va.) News Leader reporter and editor wrote the syndicated "Conservative View" opinion column from 1964 to 1992.

Kilpatrick, a onetime fervent segregationist who later changed his position on race, was also the conservative debater in the "Point-Counterpoint" segments that used to run on "60 Minutes."
