By: E&P Staff The Janesville (Wis.) Gazette and Muller Martini Mailroom Systems Inc., Allentown, Pa., recently installed an SLS3000 high-speed inserter and production-control software at the Bliss Communications daily's new facility. Equipment installation began in July and has more than doubled effective throughput, according to the newspaper.
Complementing a new KBA press (which took over printing on Oct. 21), the SLS3000 16:2 inserter is equipped with StackLinc-s for stacker communication and control, BundLinc for monitoring and control of bundle formation, KeyLinc for creation of key bundles, and DualLinc, which enables the inserter to create two distinct zones simultaneously during newspaper inserting.
Citing Muller Martini's project-management techniques, Bliss Vice President and Technical Director Charles Flynn said the project was completed on time and with training adequate "to transition to live operation without major incident." He added in a statement that the supplier's programmers worked closely with the circulation staff "to implement effective interfaces to other vendor's equipment," and that its installers helped mailroom staffers to solve issues with other equipment.
Since 1991, the Gazette has used an SLS-1000 inserter, which it expanded in 1993.
