By: E&P Staff Jim Guckert, former controversial White House correspondent better known as Jeff Gannon, had a quip ready when Bill Maher, on his live HBO program Friday night, asked about his past as a male escort. ?Usually the way it works,? Gannon said, ?is people prostitute themselves AFTER they become reporters.?
It was, perhaps, the closest he has ever come to fully admitting his pay-for-play past.
In an otherwise not very illuminating brief appearance, Gannon also addressed this week?s eyebrow-raising report that he had visited the White House more than 30 times when no presidential press briefings were being held. The reason? He attended other briefings, stopped in at the t-ball games on the lawn, and the like.
When Maher, clearly hinting that he might have also had a sleepover or two, asked if anything else was going on, Gannon answered: ?Absolutely not.?
Asked at another point about his escort past, he simply answered, ?none of it is relevant as far as my reporting goes.?
What would Gannon have asked Bush at Thursday?s press conference if he?d been let back in? He said he would have asked why the President didn?t ?get behind? the recent Minutemen crackdown on border security.
?That?s a tough question,? Maher exclaimed.
?I asked a lot of tough questions,? Gannon asserted.
