Jelenic, Journal Register Chief, Takes Leave for Cancer Surgery

By: Newspaper publisher Journal Register Co. said Friday that its chairman and chief executive is taking a leave of absence to undergo treatment for cancer.

James W. Hall, an independent director of the company, will assume the position of acting chief executive while Robert M. Jelenic is on leave, Journal Register said.

In addition, Hall has set up an operating committee, which includes the company's chief financial officer and two senior vice presidents, to help with the day-to-day operations of the company, Journal Register said.

Hall has been a director at Journal Register since July 2003, the company said.

Journal Register shares rose 10 cents to $5.40.
