By: Joe Strupp Two of California's most seasoned political editors have launched a new politics blog, according to a joint announcement sent Monday.
Jerry Roberts, former editor of the San Francisco Chronicle, and Phil Trounstine, former political editor of the San Jose Mercury News, have launched www.calbuzz.com.
"With more than 60 years' combined experience covering and engaged in California politics, we believe our new site for political news, analysis and commentary has something to add to the conversation," the duo said in an announcement. "We rather envision ourselves as a Germond and Witcover for California politics - except we're both the fat guy in the middle seat."
Roberts also served most recently as editor of the Santa Barbara News-Press, resigning suddenly in 2006 after a long-running battle with owner Wendy McCaw. That resignation led to dozens of others and started a continuing war between McCaw and many newsroom staffers that has already led to the formation of a newsroom union and a string of labor-related complaints by both sides.
Roberts has also had some legal battles with McCaw, but remains involved in other journalistic projects as a college instructor and freelance columnist for a local alternative newspaper.
"Calbuzz.com won't try to duplicate the fine work others are doing aggregating political reporting by writers at various newspapers and other media outlets," the announcement added. "Instead, we'll do our own reporting, analysis and commentary and sometimes ask others to weigh in. That's our plan at the start; this will be a learning process for us and the venture is bound to go through various incarnations."
