By: E&P Staff Jimmy Margulies of The Record in Hackensack, N.J., and King Features Syndicate has taken first place in the "Party Toons" editorial cartoon contest.
His win was announced today -- the birthday of editorial cartooning legend Thomas Nast (1840-1902) -- by contest sponsor Drew Rougier-Chapman. He's one of the producers of "Party Toons," an in-development, half-hour, weekly political TV show built around editorial cartoons and political comedy.
Margulies won $500 for the "cartoon that best expresses why editorial cartoons are so vital to democracy and why the continuing decline in the ranks of editorial cartoonists is so dangerous." His cartoon will be used to help promote "Party Toons" as its creators try to take it from a pilot episode to regular airings on PBS.
Finishing second was Mike Keefe of The Denver Post and Cagle Cartoons.
