By: John Lechliter, a veteran Kansas journalist, has been named managing editor of The Daily Union of Junction City, editor and general manager Tom Throne announced Wednesday.
Lechliter comes to Junction City after serving as assistant metro editor for the Springfield (Mo.) News-Leader, a 100,000-circulation newspaper owned by Gannett Corp.
Before his stint in Springfield, Lechliter was executive editor of The Emporia Gazette. During his six years at The Gazette, the newspaper won six straight sweepstakes awards from the Kansas Press Association.
Lechliter has also been managing editor at The Garden City Telegram, The Coffeyville Journal and the Fort Scott Tribune. In the early 1990s, he was assistant press secretary and district assistant for 4th District U.S. Rep. Dan Glickman.
Lechliter also was a member of the first Kansas Press Association Leadership Academy and is a past president of the Associated Press Managing Editors. He served in 1991 on the Kansas Select Commission for Ethical Conduct, a group appointed by state lawmakers and Gov. Bill Graves to recommend ethics reforms.
