By: (AP) John Solomon, assistant bureau chief for The Associated Press in Washington since 1999, has been appointed to the new role of director of multimedia investigative reporting.
The goal is to further APs efforts to develop compelling enterprise stories in multiple formats -- text, photo, video, audio -- that can be used in print or online.
Solomon will supervise a team of a half-dozen reporters dedicated to multimedia investigative and enterprise reporting. He will work with AP news managers across the globe to leverage the cooperative's news gathering capabilities with an eye toward developing stories that have widespread impact and appeal to consumers of Web sites, print publications, television outlets, and radio broadcasts.
The appointment was announced Friday by Executive Editor Kathleen Carroll and Managing Editor Mike Silverman.
Solomon will continue to be based in Washington. Sandy Johnson, AP's Washington bureau chief, will supervise the new initiative in coordination with Silverman.
Solomon, 38, joined the AP in 1987 in Milwaukee. As news editor there, he supervised coverage of the Jeffrey Dahmer serial murders and an investigative project that revealed teachers who had molested children had been allowed to return to the classroom. In response to the investigative stories, the state of Wisconsin changed its laws to keep convicted molesters out of school for good.
Solomon transferred in 1991 to Washington, where he has served as a reporter, editor of the bureau's enterprise team, news editor, and assistant bureau chief. Solomon has played key roles in reporting and editing during some of the capital's biggest stories, including the Clinton-era fund-raising and impeachment scandals and the Sept. 11 terror attacks.
Over the last several years, he has worked increasingly with AP's television, radio and online divisions to develop multi-formatted versions of his investigative stories.
