Johns, Ohio Sports Columnist, Dies At 91

By: (AP) Walter Johns, a retired syndicated sports columnist who wrote about top sports figures like Muhammad Ali, Ted Williams, Joe DiMaggio, and Jim Brown, has died. He was 91.

Johns, who lived in nearby Parma, Ohio, died Saturday at the hospice of Parma Community General Hospital.

He was based in Cleveland with the Central Press Association, a division of King Features Syndicate, from the mid-1930s until Central Press folded in 1971. At one time his column, "Sports Sputterings," ran in more than 2,100 newspapers.

Johns later directed publicity for the Thistledown race track for 11 years.

He co-founded the Parma Post in 1947 and was editor and co-publisher for 18 years before selling the newspaper in 1965. It is now part of Sun Newspapers.

His wife, Mary, died in 1991. Johns is survived by two sons, two daughters, 12 grandchildren, and 14 great-grandchildren.
