By: E&P Staff The New York Times promoted Jonathan I. Landman from assistant managing editor to deputy managing editor responsible for digital journalism. The change is effective August 23.
In his new role, Landman will oversee Times Web and television content. He will also serve as the newsroom's representative on the Times's joint venture with Discovery Communications Inc., the Discovery Times Channel.
Landman joined The Times in 1987 as a copy editor and quickly moved up the ranks, serving as assistant national editor in 1989, assistant metropolitan editor in 1990, assistant editor in Washington in 1991, and as deputy editor of the Washington bureau in 1992.
In 1994, he began editing the Week in Review section before becoming metropolitan editor in 1999. From 2003-2004, Landman served as assistant managing editor and a year later, was named culture editor. In May, he returned to his post of assistant managing editor.
Before becoming a member of The Times's staff, Landman was deputy city editor at The Daily News from 1985-1987. He also worked previously for Newsday, The Chicago Sun-Times, The Ford Foundation, and Scholastic Magazines.
