Posted
By: E&P Staff The circulation director of The Jonesboro (AR) Sun was killed Wednesday afternoon after the truck he was working on fell off two jack stands and onto him in a parking lot adjacent to his home.

Richard Bales, 45, was dead when first responders arrived, according to the Jonesboro Police Department. The Sun reported on its Web site that Lorri Householder found Bales underneath the truck when he failed to return to the paper's offices yesterday afternoon. "Rick never missed a meeting, and I thought something was wrong," Householder told the paper.

According to neighbors, Bales often worked on personal and work vehicles at his home. "I regularly seen him working on his car. I seen him the other day working on the Jonesboro Sun's truck and he seemed like he had everything pretty taken care of," said neighbor Alfred Walker to KAIT-TV in Jonesboro.

Bales had been at The Sun since December of 2007. He had previously served as circulation manager at The Hattiesburg (MS) American from 1999 to 2001, and as circulation director from 2001 to 2004, when he left to take the same position at the Town Talk newspaper in Alexandria, Va. Before arriving at The Sun, he had served as the state circulation sales and marketing manager for Gannett Corp. newspapers in Louisiana and Mississippi.

Funeral arrangements have not yet been finalized. Bales is survived by four children, Kristy, Wesley, Katie, and Kylie.
