Journal Comm Newspaper Revenue Sinks in July

By: E&P Staff Journal Communications reported weak revenue results Tuesday, led by a 25.5% plunge in classified ad revenue at its flagship Milwaukee Journal Sentinel.

Journal Communications said its publishing revenue fell 9.5% to $17.21 million for the period ended July 27, 2008, compared to its year-ago seventh period.

Total revenue, with its broadcast properties included, was down 6.7% to $31.77 million.

Newspaper ad revenue fell 13.8%, led by a decline of 14.6%, to $9.62 million, at the Journal Sentinel. Newspaper circulation revenue dipped 0.6% to $3.95 million.

At the Journal Sentinel retail advertising revenue was down 4.3%, and national advertising, at $400,000 was off 39.2%.

Classified fell on the usual suspects: employment, which dropped 27.7%; real estate, down 35.5%; and auto, off 23.6%.

At Journal Communication's community newspapers and shoppers operations, total advertising revenue was $2.41 million, down 10.5% compared to the year-ago period. Retail advertising revenue in the group was down 10.2%, and classified fell 12.0%.
