Journal Communications Dec. Revenue Down

By: Journal Communications Inc. said Wednesday that December revenue from continuing operations slumped 23.1 percent, primarily hurt by an extra week in the prior year.

The media company reported sales from continuing operations fell to $44.6 million from $58 million a year earlier.

Publishing segment revenue, which includes daily newspaper and community newspapers and shoppers, dropped 24.7 percent to $24.3 million for the period ended Dec. 30. Ad sales from continuing operations slid 24.1 percent to $38.1 million, while circulation revenue dipped 17.7 percent to $5 million.

Excluding the additional week, revenue from continuing operations declined 9.9 percent and ad sales fell 11.1 percent. Litigation-related ad credit minimally added to both periods as well. Excluding the extra week and the credits, revenue from continuing operations dropped 8.4 percent and ad sales slipped 9.5 percent.

Advertising revenue at the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel daily newspaper sagged 27.3 percent to $15 million.

Total revenue at radio and television stations in the broadcasting segment slid 21.2 percent to $25.7 million. Radio group sales tumbled 21.1 percent to $7.9 million on softness in local and national advertising. Television sales declined 21.3 percent to $12.3 million.

Journal Communications publishes 49 community newspapers and shoppers in Wisconsin and Florida. The company also owns and operates 35 radio stations and 11 television stations in 12 states and an additional television station under a local marketing agreement.
