While total revenues were up, Journal Communications said revenues for its publishing segment, consisting of its flagship Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, community newspapers and shoppers, were down 5.4% for the period to $23.64 million, down 5.4% compared to $24.99 million.

The 2006 seventh period ended July 23, compared to last year, when it ended July 24.

Publishing advertising revenue was $17.14 million, down 5.1% compared to $18.06 million a year ago. Circulation revenue of $4.17 million was essentially flat compared to $4.15 million.

"Other" revenue of $2.33 million was down 16.2%, reflecting the loss of commercial printing due to the shutdown of its Louisiana printing plant damaged in Hurricane Katrina.

At the Journal Sentinel, ad revenue was down 4.7% to $12.35 million.

Retail advertising was essentially flat, while classified ad revenue plummeted 16%. Auto classified was down 34.9% in July, while help wanted decreased 10.7% and real estate fell 4%.

National advertising was up 48.1% to $890,000, while circulation revenue increased 0.7% to $3.96 million.

At the company's community newspapers and shoppers, total advertising revenue was $4.79 million, down 6.0%, on a decreased in retail of 6.5% and a decline in classified of 4.2% partially offset by an increase of 9.8% in the "other" category.

Journal Communications said its total advertising revenues increased 14.3% to $33.03 million, chiefly on the contribution of new television operations acquired last December.
