By: E&P Staff The combination of increased advertising revenues and cost reductions in the publishing division of Journal Communications helped the Milwaukee-based company show improved earnings results in the fourth quarter of last year and full-year 2003, the company announced Thursday.
Overall, Journal Communications released results showing net earnings were up 31.5% to $18.8 million in the fourth quarter, compared with the same period in 2002. Net earnings rose 15.4% for the full year, to $66.8 million. Revenues were up 1.8%, to $193.4 million in the quarter, while revenues were basically flat at $798.3 million for all of last year.
In the company's publishing unit -- most notably the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel (
Click for QuikCap) -- revenues increased 6.6% in the fourth quarter of last year, to $77.7 million. Revenues inched up 1.9%, to $317 million for the full year. Earnings for the quarter were up 52.2%, to $10.2 million, and improved 9.6% for all of 2003, to $33.2 million. Newsprint prices per-ton were up 7.9% for the year, the company said.
In addition to the Journal Sentinel, Journal Communications' other media holdings include more than 90 community newspapers and shoppers in eight states, 38 radio stations and six television outlets.
