By: E&P Staff Journal Communications reported today that for its publishing segment revenue declined 2.1% to $27 million in May compared to the same period a year ago. Ad revenue was down 2.2% to $20 million. Circulation revenue dropped 2.6% to $4.2 million. Other revenue was flat at $2.7 million reflecting the loss of commercial printing due to the closure of the company?s Louisiana printing plant.
For its daily newspapers, total ad revenue slipped 3.7% to $14.3 million. Retail was flat. National ad revenue plummeted 27.6%. Classified ad revenue dropped 6.4%. Within the classified category, help wanted was down 4.1% and auto dropped 31.4%. Real estate grew 4.4%.
At the company?s community papers and shoppers, total ad revenue was up 1.9% to $5.6 million. Retail was up slightly. Classified grew 10.5%.
The company said it would be recording the Shorewest litigation settlement and voluntary credit to preprint advertisers next month.
