Journal Communications September Sales Dips

By: Media company Journal Communications Inc. said Tuesday its September revenue from continuing operations slipped 7.1 percent on continued publishing and broadcasting segment softness.

Ad sales for the period ended Sept. 30 fell 8.4 percent to $41.3 million from $45.1 million.

Revenue at the publishing segment, which includes daily newspaper and community newspapers and shoppers, declined 5.1 percent to $25.8 million from $27.2 million in the prior year. Ad revenue for the division dropped 7.2 percent to $19.3 million.

Advertising revenue at the company's flagship Milwaukee Journal Sentinel daily newspaper dipped 5.1 percent to $15.9 million.

Total revenue at radio and television stations in the broadcasting segment sagged 9.5 percent to $22 million from $24.3 million. Television group revenue slumped 11.9 percent to $13.1 million primarily on less political and issue advertising revenue and a reduction in national ad sales.

Journal Communications (nyse: JRN - news - people ) publishes 45 community newspapers and shoppers in Wisconsin and Florida. The company also owns and operates 35 radio stations and 10 television stations in 12 states and two television stations under local marketing agreements.
