Journal Register Ad Rev Drops in May

By: E&P Staff The Journal Register Co. reported today that May total revenue declined 1.6% to $35.4 million compared with the same period a year ago.

On a pro-forma basis, advertising revenue fell 2.6% on softness in the company?s Great Lake clusters, Michigan, and greater Cleveland. Excluding the Great Lake Clusters, ad revenue was flat.

Retail advertising revenue was up slightly 0.3%. National ad revenue slipped 19.1%. Classified advertising revenue dropped 5.4%. Within the classified category, real estate increased 0.5%. Employment declined 5.7%. Auto dropped 19.1%.

Online revenue at the company grew 34.5% to $1.3 million. Online revenue at JobsInTheUS was up 57.8%.

In the Greater Philadelphia cluster, ad revenue at The Times Herald in Norristown was up 5.6%. The company?s weekly group, Chesapeake Publishing, was up 30.2%.

In the New England cluster, ad revenue at The Herald News in Fall River, Mass., grew 3.8%. Hometown Publications in West Warwick, R.I., increased 7.8%.

In the Mid-Hudson, N.Y., cluster, ad revenue at The Daily Freeman in Kingston advanced 4%. The Taconic Press in Millbrook was up 3.7%.

In the Capital-Saratoga, N.Y., cluster, The Record in Troy reported ad revenue growth, up 6.4%.
