John Paton is one of the most sought-after executives and visionaries in the newspaper industry today -- and E&P has him as the opening keynoter for the Interactive Media Conference in Las Vegas June 16.

In his first 100 days as CEO, Mr. Paton has captured the industry’s imagination with his bold moves to transform Journal Register Co. from a bankrupt newspaper chain with a reputation for mediocrity and  morale-crushing cost-cutting into a news and information company with a “Digital-First, Print-Last” approach to publishing.

With JRC’s Ben Franklin Project, he proved that a daily and a weekly could report, edit, sell and produce online and print editions using only free tools available on the Internet. Now all 18 JRC dailies will do the same on July 4.

There’s tremendous interest in Mr. Paton’s strategy for JRC because he has a proven track record as a media innovator. He grew impreMedia LLC from two Spanish-language dailies into the largest news and information company serving the Hispanic community with an audience in that demographic second only to Univision, the television and radio giant. Mr. Paton is also advising the new owners of Canwest’s newspapers in Canada as they engineer the resurgence of that chain, which has just emerged from bankruptcy.

Mr. Paton was E&P’s pick for Publisher of the Year in 2009 for the transformation of impreMedia to a modern multi-platform news company. Hear how he’s taking on the challenge of doing the same at one of the oldest legacy publishers in the U.S.

Keynoting on the second day of the Interactive Media Conference will be another key figure in the new media ecosystem: Josh Cohen, Google News’ Senior Business Project Manager.

Some 40 top media figures from inside and outside the newspaper industry will talk on these and more urgent topics:

* Can Digital Tablets Save Media?
* Vendor Roulette: Choosing the Right One
* It's All About the App
* Lessons From the Local Startups
* Advertising Focus: Reaching Jaded Consumers
* Editorial Focus: Will Twitter Peter Out?

The Interactive Media Conference also includes the 15th-annual EPpy Awards, showcasing the best media company Web sites. Over both days, the annual Tradeshow will feature leading technology vendors and service providers to help newsrooms, operations, sales and circulation succeed in these challenging times.

On Tuesday, June 15th, Suburban Newspapers of America will sponsor the pre-conference BLINDER/SNA REVENUE BOOT CAMP - ONLINE, PRINT, MOBILE & MORE.
