Journal Register Co. Reports Weak April

By: E&P Staff Journal Register Co. reported on Wednesday that total advertising revenue for April declined 4.1% on a pro forma basis reflecting softness in the company?s Great Lakes clusters, Michigan, and greater Cleveland, and the impact of the Easter holiday.

The company noted the Great Lake Clusters have been affected by the struggling automotive industry. Both clusters were down 6.8%; excluding these results, ad revenue dropped 2.5%.

Retail advertising slipped 3.7% on softness in home furnishing and department store advertising.

Classified revenue decreased 4.9%. Within the classified category, real estate increased 0.5%. Growth in real estate was led by the company?s Mid-Hudson, New York cluster, up 11.2% and Connecticut and Capital-Saratoga, New York each up 11%. Employment advertising declined 5.8%. Auto fell 18.5%.

National advertising revenue slipped 0.5%.

Online revenue for the company grew 36.6% to $1.6 million.
