By: E&P Staff Journal Register launched SeeClickFix -- the portal that allows citizens to report on hyperlocal problems like litter, potholes and even speeding cars -- at the Websites of all its 18 daily newspapers Tuesday.
The partnership is the biggest yet for New Haven, Conn.-based SeeClickFix. Journal Register called it a "major citizen journalism initiative ... to empower citizens to improve their communities."
The SeeClickFix portal pages allow users to report issues in their neighborhoods such as blighted buildings or dumping on vacant land, and follow progress in resolving the problems. It can also be used to laud volunteers for community improvements.
On the New Haven Register's Website, for instance, SeeClickFix users have reported uncollected garbage, a police car that ran a red light and a faulty street light.
"Our job is to serve our communities through quality journalism. Our partnership with SeeClickFix will help us do our job much better," Journal Register CEO John Paton said in a statement. "The new ecological system for news recognizes that our citizens, harnessing the power of digital devices, play a vital role in covering a community. SeeClickFix and our websites will provide the necessary tools for those citizen journalists."
Paton said SeeClickFix will come to all Journal Register's 150 Websites in the coming months.
