By: David Saabye, corporate director of online services for the Journal Register Co., has been appointed deputy director of U.S. online newspaper markets for The Associated Press.
The appointment, which takes effect April 16, was announced Tuesday by Sue Cross, AP vice president for U.S. online newspapers.
Saabye, who will be based in New York, will be a product manager for newspaper online services as part of a team helping U.S. newspapers develop their new media audiences and businesses.
As online director at Journal Register since 2005, Saabye led the company's online growth strategy and oversaw operations for more than 200 newspaper-affiliated Web sites, including development of a new Web publishing platform, a partnership with Yahoo! (nasdaq: YHOO - news - people ) and acquisition of JobsInTheUS.com.
Saabye joined the New Haven (Conn.) Register in 2000 as webmaster for the Journal Register newspaper Web sites. In 2001, he was appointed general manager of electronic publishing for the Register.
He started his newspaper career in 1997 at Southern Rhode Island Newspapers as an editorial page designer, and in January 1999 moved to The Herald News in Fall River, Mass., as online editor.
He has served as a member of the Associated Press Digital Advisory Committee, the Yahoo!/Newspaper Consortium Steering Committee, and the Suburban Newspaper Association Interactive Media Advisory Committee.
Saabye, 32, holds a bachelor of arts degree in psychology from the University of Vermont.
