By: Staff reports Writer, Photographer Were Chronicling Voyage
The Miami Herald reported Thursday that the U.S. Coast Guard
rescued 46 people from a sinking sailboat near Haiti - including
two free-lance journalists covering the voyage for The New York
Times Magazine.
The wooden sailboat started taking on water 18 miles northwest of
Haiti, when a Coast Guard vessel on routine patrol spotted the
craft, the Herald said.
The Haitians, writer Michael Finkel, and photographer Christopher
Anderson, were turned over to Bahamian authorities because the
craft was found in that country's waters. The Haitians will be
returned to their country, and the journalists are believed to be
heading back to New York.
The journalists were chronicling a wave of Haitian immigration.
The Herald reported that the Coast Guard has interdicted 746
Haitians so far this year, compared with 480 last year. Fourteen
Haitians died last month when their ship sank off the Bahamas.
