Journalists, L.A. Council Strike Deal

Posted
By: (AP) Seven journalists struck by police officers dispersing protesters outside the Democratic National Convention last year will reportedly receive $60,000 under a settlement approved by the City Council.

The council also agreed to have the Los Angeles Police Department draft a policy recognizing the rights of reporters to cover public assemblies, including those police declare unlawful, the Los Angeles Times reported Thursday.

The journalists, including veteran television consumer reporter David Horowitz, said the department violated their rights when officers used force to break up a large crowd of protesters during the August 2000 convention.
