By: Joe Strupp Can reporters rock? You bet. And many are gathering next month to show how at the first annual charity "Battle of D.C. Media Bands, " or "Journopalooza."
The event is set for Friday, Jan. 9, 2009 (the day after Elvis' birthday) at the National Press Club in Washington, D.C.
"Four of D.C.'s best bands -- composed of journalists from the Washington Post, the Los Angeles Times, McClatchy Newspapers, the Washington Independent, Bloomberg News, among others -- will try to claim for themselves the title of Best Reporter-Based Washington Rock Group," says a promotional release.
"Who will prevail? The bluesy thump of Nobody's Business? The New Pornographers-esque power pop of Anchorage? The eclectic sounds of Suspicious Package? The spare, dark indie rock of The Surge? Only the first annual JOURNOPALOOZA will determine who wears the crown."
The famed Washington Post cartoonist Tom Toles plays with Suspicious Package -- and has designed a t-shirt that will be put on sale.
The event will raise money for The Committee to Protect Journalists' Journalist Assistance Fund and the National Press Club's training programs and scholarships.
