Judge Denies Requests by Condit's Wife

By: (AP) A judge denied a request by the wife of former Rep. Gary Condit to make public confidential sources used by the National Enquirer in a story that claimed she attacked Chandra Levy.

Carolyn Condit filed a $10 million libel lawsuit against the tabloid after it published a story in August 2001 with the headline "Cops: Condit's Wife Attacked Chandra." Carolyn Condit has said she never met the federal intern, who disappeared two years ago and was later found dead.

Police investigating Levy's death have said the report was false. The National Enquirer has said it stands by the story.

The libel case is set for trial Sept. 30.

Neville Johnson, a lawyer for Carolyn Condit, said he needed the sources' names to prove his claim that the story was false. Johnson said the judge issued his ruling Monday.

The judge also denied a request by the National Enquirer for records from Gary Condit's cell phone and Washington apartment. The paper wants to determine whether Carolyn Condit had contact with Levy, apparently to support the original story.

Condit has told police he had a romance with Levy, but had nothing to do with her disappearance. He is not considered a suspect in her death, which was ruled a homicide.
