By: A federal judge declined Monday to revoke indicted former newspaper tycoon Conrad Black's bail but said she hasn't ruled out demanding he put up more collateral.
U.S. District Judge Amy St. Eve ordered Black's attorney to hand over revised financial statements and update her on the status of a Canadian tax lien on Black's Palm Beach, Fla., mansion. Another hearing was scheduled for Friday.
St. Eve also ordered that $5.8 million prosecutors had sought to have posted as additional bond be held in escrow pending her bail decision.
Black, who once headed the Hollinger International Inc. media empire, posted a $20 million bail bond last December, securing his freedom following his indictment on fraud and racketeering charges.
Prosecutors last week asked St. Eve to revoke Black's bail or order him to put up more collateral, arguing that he gave them false and misleading information about the extent of his assets.
Ed Gensen, Black's lawyer, has said prosecutors' filing was filled with "half-truths" and that they have overestimated the amount of the Canadian tax lien.
Black is scheduled to go to trial next March on charges that he plundered millions of dollars from Hollinger International. He has pleaded not guilty.
