THE INTER AMERICAN Press Association has named longtime No. 2 man Julio Mu?oz executive director to replace Bill Williamson, who is retiring.
Mu?oz, 47, takes over the Miami-based group June 1. The appointment was announced at the group's recent meeting in Guatemala City.
Mu?oz has been IAPA assistant director and director of the group's technical center for 12 years. A Chilean-born U.S. resident, he holds a doctorate in mass communication from the University of Minnesota. He spent six years at El Sur, Concepcion, Chile.
Williamson, who announced his retirement in July, turns 65 March 30. He has led the organization for 13 years and attended 32 consecutive annual meetings, including during 19 years as editor of the defunct English-language Brazil Herald, Rio de Janiero.
Williamson said he is leaving the IAPA in the best shape ? in membership, finances and free-press activities ? in its 52-year history. Likewise, press freedom in the Americas is probably better than ever before, he said. "I would like to think IAPA has had a little something to do with that."
