By: E&P Staff Juneau Empire Publisher Robert O. Hale announced Wednesday he will step down from his position. His last day at the paper will be Aug. 14.
Hale, a 28-year veteran of the business, has accepted a position as a financial consultant for Edward Jones. He has been with the Empire since 2003. A replacement has not yet been announced.
"Being in Alaska has been a rich and rewarding experience, and having worked with this team of talented, dedicated people has been the highlight of my career," Hale told the Empire on Wednesday. "It is time for my wife and I to live where we want to live in the Puget Sound area and, as my grandfather would say, to farm in new fields."
Hale, 51, will move to the Seattle area for training in October along with his wife Deana, who is also joining Edward Jones as a financial consultant.
A Texas native, Hale majored in journalism at Texas Christian University. After graduation he broke into the business as a temporary legislative reporter in Topeka, Kan. for the Associated Press. He moved to Juneau from the semi-weekly paper The Walton Tribune of Monroe, Ga., where he'd served as publisher from 1994 to 2003.
Prior to working in Monroe, Hale had published newspapers in Kansas, Arkansas, and Texas, and had edited newspapers in Iowa and Missouri.
