By: Members of the media got their first look Tuesday at The Kansas City Star's state-of-the-art printing and delivery facility in the heart of downtown.
At a special VIP event, Star and Knight Ridder officials dedicated the Press Pavilion, which houses the newspaper's new, high-tech printing presses that are billed as the best in the world.
On Monday, The Star unveiled a massive redesign of its publication featuring brighter colors, smaller pages and crisper type that will be easier to read - all the product of the new presses.
Newspaper officials say that while the pages are about 20 percent smaller than before, there will be more of them. The smaller format will make it easier to spread the paper out on a table or desk, they say, while helping save money on newsprint.
They note that many other large newspapers across the country also are going to the smaller page size.
While the most obvious changes are in the newspaper's look, the redesign includes more new features, quick-to-read summaries and highlights, and more space devoted to local news coverage. Additional graphics that will go with news stories also are a part of the new Star.
Another benefit of the new presses will be later deadlines, officials say, which will allow The Star to get more news that happens later in the night onto the pages.
