Kansas Weekly: Candidate Illegally Stuffed Papers With Political Fliers

By: E&P Staff The Yates Center News of southeast Kansas claims that a local political candidate illegally stuffed her political fliers in the newspaper after it left out her information in an election article, the Lawrence (Kan.) Journal-World reported today.

The News posted a column by owner and publisher Stewart Braden that blasted the actions of Jana Shaver, a Republican candidate for the State Board of Education, as ?unethical as well as illegal.?

The Journal-World reports that a News question-and-answer segment for the candidates in the District 9 education board race omitted Shaver?s portion. The News claims it made a mistake and apologized. After the omission, Shaver called the paper and asked for it to help her distribute her fliers before the August 1 primaries; the paper responded by telling her to place them at businesses that sell the paper. However, at one establishment Shaver began to place her fliers in the paper.

Once the paper found out about Shaver?s actions, it complained to Shaver, who apologized but noted that the information on her fliers would have been printed in the paper anyway had it not been for the omission. She also offered to go back to the business and removed the fliers.

Braden told the Journal-World that Shaver?s actions were illegal and included trespassing, copyright infringement, and misrepresentation of the publication. Though he reserves the right to press charges, he told the Journal-World yesterday that he wouldn?t.
