By: E&P Staff German printing and publishing house Miller has ordered a 32-page doublewide KBA Colora press, slated to go into production next spring, when it will replace an Albert 500 offset press from KBA Frankenthal.
"Our aim is to further enhance color and immediacy while honing the competitiveness of our newspaper titles on a sustained basis by taking on board new production and advertising capabilities," Publisher Thomas Miller said in a statement. "KBA is customizing the press line to suit our production structure and plant architecture."
Founded as a printer and stationer, Miller launched its first newspaper, now the Traunsteiner Tagblatt, in 1855. Last year it acquired the Berchtesgadener Anzeiger. The two local titles circulate approximately 22,600 weekday copies and 30,200 Saturday copies. The Colora also will print a weekly supplement, the Chiemgau-Blatter, as well as the Traunsteiner Anzeigen-Kurier, a 60,000-circulation weekly launched in late 2004. (Miller's editorial department also provides the political, business and other sections to the Reichenhaller Tagblatt and the Freilassinger Anzeiger.)
The 75,000-cph Colora will have an 18.5-inch cutoff and a maximum web width of 49.5 inches (Berliner format). The floor-mounted press will have two towers of H-type units for four-over-four color printing, a superstructure with two formers, KF 3 jaw folder and two KBA Pastomat C reelstands with KBA Patras M reel handling.
The order specifies two turner bars engineered to accommodate 7/8 and 3/8 web leads for the production of half-covers and flying pages. The press also will feature automated ink pumping, two EAE control desks and color-register control.
