KBA Comet Press Starts at Lynchburg Paper

Posted
By: Jim Rosenberg Its purchase announced two years ago, the KBA Comet press at The News & Advance last night went into live production last night for today's edition of Media General's Lynchburg, Va., daily.

Media General has another new Comet in production 200 miles west at its Bristol (Va.) Herald-Courier. Unlike Bristol's floor-mounted Comet, however, the press in Lynchburg was erected on a concrete table.

The Comet in Lynchburg's larger pressroom replaced a Harris 1650 installed in 1974. It supplies more four-color work, as well a color for the daily comics and the TV section's programming grid. The two-around singlewide's speed, color
quality and variable web width capability (22 to 39 inches) also are important in printing other products, according to Media General Publishing Division Operations Vice President Bob Rogers.

Lynchburg's new production facility also features K&M Titan G60 inserting equipment and Quipp stackers and wrappers.

With their specially designed turner bars, ribbon decks, and folder positioning, the presses in Lynchburg and Bristol can print three broadsheet pages across the web, rather than the two ordinarily expected on a singlewide machine. The paper reported that its business section is no longer run as a separate tabloid section.

With five eight-couple towers and provision for another position, the press has seven KBA Pastoline reelstands with infeed systems, two KBA 2:3:3 jaw folders plus a quarterfolder, and an EAE press-control system with four consoles.
