By: E&P Staff KBA North America announced its second sale of a 2-by-3 press and Inland Newspaper Machinery has recorded its second sale of an Americolor -- the third sale since the shaftless add-on color tower was introduced.
The News & Advance, Lynchburg, Va., will install a KBA Comet in an expanded pressroom next year. Another Media General daily, the Bristol (Va.) Herald-Courier, is installing a Comet.
The Comet will be faster than the early-1970s Harris 1650 that now prints the 36,153-circulation News & Advance, which looks to the Comet's color, quality, speed and ability to handle variable web widths to support printing of semicommercial products.
Like Bristol's press, the two-plate-around Comet for Lynchburg will be able to print three broadsheet pages across one web rather than the traditional two, thanks to its turner bar, ribbon decks and folder positioning -- an arrangement that adds 50% to page capacity for a lower investment than installing additional printing units. Unlike Bristol's floor-mounted press, Lynchburg's will rely on a concrete table.
With five eight-couple towers and provision for another position, the press will have seven KBA Pastoline reelstands with infeed systems, two KBA KF 3 (2:3:3) jaw folders, a KBA quarter-folder, and a four-console EAE press-control system.
Hoosier Times Inc., Bloomington, Ind., is the third buyer of an Americolor tower, manufactured for Inland Newspaper Machinery, Lenexa, Kan., by Dauphin Graphic Machines. To be delivered in December, the tower will be added at the end of a five-unit, 13-couple KBA Express 50 press line commissioned in 1985.
The shaftless Americolor will be equipped with console-operated automatic ink controls, K&F plate lockups, Oxy-Dry automatic blanket-wash system and Technotrans spray dampening.
Hoosier Times prints Schurz Communications' Bloomington Herald-Times, a multi-edition Sunday paper, and its dailies in Martinsville, Noblesville, and Mooresville, Indiana. The tower doubles its four-color capacity.
