The Jordan Press Foundation, in Amman, plans to boost capacity and flexibility with a six-tower KBA Commander heatset press for newspaper, semi-commercial and hybrid products. The Commander will be installed at a new plant that will include a new mailroom and central store. The $33 million project is scheduled for completion by the end of 2011.

JPF publishes a national daily, Al Rai, with Jordan's biggest circulation and advertising section, the English-language Jordan Times and Hatem monthly magazine for younger readers.

Heatset will enable semi-commercial and hybrid work on newsprint and higher-quality paper stock for JPF titles contract work that is expected "to shorten the payback time," according to Technical Committee Chairman and Commercial Press Manager Amjad Ayesh.

The Commander will have a 22.75-inch cut-off ad maximum web width of 59.8 inches, with maximum rated output of 80,000 copies per hour in straight mode. In heatset mode, web widths 49.6 inches to 59.8 inches will be available. Maximum page count in full-color production will be 96 broadsheet or 192 tabloid pages, with 16 broadsheet or 32 tabloid pages run through the dryer (with chill rollers).

Each tower can print a four-color web or two two-color webs and will feature automatic ink pumping, color- and cutoff-register controls, fan-out compensation, semi-automatic plate changers, automatic blanket and inking-unit washing systems, KBA RollerTronic automatic roller bearings, single turner bars, turner decks and bay-window rollers.

Folder superstructures will have two formers, and the two KF 5 jaw folders will have length/cross perforating and quarterfolding capabilities. The substructure will include eight KBA Pastomat reelstands with KBA Patras A automatic reel logistics and two stripping stations.

EAE will supply five control consoles with Print software for job scheduling and press presetting, a RIP interface and a diagnostics PC.
