By: E&P Staff The Kansas City Star reported that Lauren Chapin, its restaurant critic for eight years and a James Beard Foundation award finalist in 2005, died Wednesday at age 50.
Chapin died in a hospital after she collapsed during a workout two days earlier. Her family told the Star she died from a ruptured aneurysm associated with a vascular malformation at the base of her brain.
Before joining the Star, Chapin spent 10 years as a freelance photographer for the paper and while teaching photography at an area college.
Chapin is survived by her husband, Timothy Finn, The Star's pop music critic, and their two daughters, as well as her brother, two sisters and parents.
It was on her parents Missouri farm at age 11, she wrote six years ago, that she made her "first deep connection between food and family," having spent the day pulling potatoes from the mud with her brother and sisters. The Star quotes her column from 2002: "It kindled my passion for food and all its cultural symbolism. It's what led me to this coveted job as restaurant critic."
