By: E&P Staff Another editorial cartoonist has expressed misgivings about animation being allowed in the editorial cartooning category of the Pulitzer Prizes.
The Denver Post's Mike Keefe, in comments posted on Daryl Cagle's cartoon blog, said: "I'm a great fan of editorial cartoon animation and have tried my hand at it several times. But ... not all cartoonists are afforded the time and resources to create animations. How can the print-only cartoonists compete with animators? ... My suggestion is that a separate category be established, in all cartoon competitions, for animated work versus print work."
Keefe, who's syndicated by Cagle Cartoons, said Scott Stantis'
column last week was "exactly on target" when it questioned animated work being considered along with print work. Stantis is an editorial cartoonist with The Birmingham (Ala.) News and Copley News Service.
Like Stantis, Keefe is a big admirer of the work of Walt Handelsman, the Newsday, Melville, N.Y./Tribune Media Services creator who won the Pulitzer Prize for editorial cartooning last month partly because of his animation. "I love Walt's new stuff and endorsed his print cartoons as a Pulitzer juror in 1997," said Keefe. "But there's some shape-shifting going on in our profession that requires redefinition."
